When Harata and Cody welcomed their fourth child in December 2020, they expected the familiar joys of bringing a newborn home. Instead, their son, Archie Gemmell, needed emergency surgery just hours after birth. His arrival marked the beginning of a medical journey that would include nine operations.

An Unexpected Diagnosis

Archie initially appeared healthy, but Harata noticed something unusual during a diaper change. Doctors discovered that he had been born without an anus. An abnormal connection between his bowel and urinary tract was allowing stool to pass through his penis.

The diagnosis meant Archie needed immediate treatment. His parents suddenly faced the uncertainty of watching their newborn undergo a major operation.

Emergency Surgery and a Long-Awaited Homecoming

Archie was transferred to another hospital, where surgeons created a colostomy. The procedure allowed waste to leave his body through an opening in his abdomen and collect in a bag.

After nine days in the hospital, he went home to meet his three older siblings. It was a welcome milestone, although further surgeries and recoveries lay ahead.

Finding Joy Along the Way

By August 2026, five-year-old Archie enjoyed riding his bike, watching Paw Patrol, and spending time in the garage with his dad. He also openly showed other children his colostomy bag, helping them understand how his body worked.

His family was preparing for a tenth operation, hoping he would eventually be able to pass stool without the bag. That possibility offered hope, although the outcome remained uncertain.

Looking Ahead

For Archie’s parents, progress means seeing their son comfortable, active, and able to enjoy everyday life. Their hope remains simple: fewer painful days and more freedom for Archie to play, learn, and grow.
