Charlotte’s Long Search for Answers Leads to a Rare Genetic Diagnosis

Charlotte Whiting’s early childhood included 18 operations and medical procedures. For her parents, Emily and Dan, managing her care also meant searching for an explanation: What connected the many health problems their daughter had faced since birth?

A genetic diagnosis eventually brought clarity, giving the family a better understanding of Charlotte’s needs and helping her doctors plan her care.

A Difficult Beginning

Doctors first identified concerns during Emily’s 20-week ultrasound. When Charlotte was born at around 37 weeks, her parents held her briefly before she was taken to the neonatal intensive care unit, where she stayed for 72 days.

Before she was a week old, Charlotte underwent surgery to improve her kidney function. About a month later, another complex operation removed a cyst threatening her liver and reconstructed parts of her digestive system.

Her medical needs also included heart and gallbladder problems, along with a cleft lip and palate.

Genetic Testing Provides an Answer

In 2023, Cleveland Clinic geneticist Dr. Adnan Alsadah used whole-genome sequencing to identify Hardikar syndrome, a rare condition associated with changes in the MED12 gene. Earlier genetic testing had not identified the underlying cause.

The diagnosis gave Charlotte’s specialists information they could use to coordinate treatment and monitor potential complications. Although it did not offer a cure, it helped them understand how her conditions were connected.

Finding Support Through Shared Experience

Emily had already been helping other parents by co-hosting a podcast about raising children with complex medical needs. After Charlotte’s diagnosis, she established an online community that connected families facing similar challenges.

Those relationships offered practical support and the comfort of speaking with people who understood their experience.

At home, Charlotte was also a loving older sister to Liam and Eden, bringing happiness to her family amid the demands of ongoing care.

Moving Forward With Greater Understanding

Charlotte’s diagnosis did not end her medical journey. It gave her family an explanation after years of uncertainty—and helped turn that understanding into more informed care, meaningful connections, and renewed hope for the years ahead.
