A Chance to Grow Up: Makaia’s Family Searches for Specialized Heart Care

Two-year-old Makaia has already undergone major heart surgery and repeated hospital stays. Now, her family in Perth, Australia, is looking overseas for another treatment option—and the chance to watch their little girl grow up.

For her mother, Ellen Maughan, that hope means more birthdays, school days, and time together as a family.

A Rare Condition Places Strain on Her Heart

Makaia was born with Alagille syndrome, a rare genetic condition that can affect multiple organs, along with a complex congenital heart condition.

Her pulmonary arteries, which carry blood from the heart to the lungs, are severely underdeveloped. According to her family, the branch arteries measure around 3 millimeters and have not grown as doctors had hoped.

Ellen says the strain on Makaia’s heart has led to heart failure, making the search for further care increasingly urgent.

Looking Beyond Australia for Treatment

The family says they were told that no further surgical options were available for Makaia in Australia. They began contacting specialists internationally.

A team at Lurie Children’s Hospital in Chicago reviewed her medical history and imaging. According to the family, the specialists believe pulmonary artery reconstruction may be possible.

Further assessment is needed to determine whether surgery can proceed.

The Financial Challenge Ahead

Makaia’s aunt, Caitlin Maughan, organized a fundraiser with a goal of A$1.8 million to support medical assessment and potential surgery.

The plan involves two stages: detailed testing and cardiac investigations, followed by surgery if specialists determine it is appropriate.

For the family, raising the money means gaining access to that evaluation and learning what may be possible.

The Everyday Life Her Family Hopes to Protect

Makaia’s relatives describe her as funny, affectionate, and strong-willed. Alongside her medical needs is a little girl whose personality brings joy to those around her.

Ellen hopes to see her daughter attend school and grow up alongside her younger brother. Those ordinary milestones have become deeply meaningful as the family faces an uncertain future.

Taking the Next Step With Hope

Makaia’s family is working toward the next stage of care without knowing what the outcome will be. Their goal remains clear: to explore the available options and give her the best possible chance at more years of childhood.
