Cher is pushing back against her daughter-in-law Marieangela King-Allman’s effort to take a court-appointed role in the care of Elijah Blue Allman, escalating an already complicated family and legal dispute surrounding the singer’s 50-year-old son.

In a new court filing, Cher’s legal team argued that King-Allman should not be appointed to oversee Elijah’s affairs and alleged that her renewed involvement may be motivated by money or publicity. King-Allman strongly disputes that characterization, saying her priority is ensuring her husband receives meaningful, long-term treatment.

According to PEOPLE’s report on Cher’s latest court filing, the dispute remains unresolved and a judge is now expected to revisit the issue in December.

Cher Opposes Marieangela King-Allman’s Appointment

Cher filed a supplemental brief in Los Angeles court on August 28 opposing the possibility of King-Allman being appointed to a fiduciary role for Elijah.

The filing argued that King-Allman had been estranged from Elijah during periods when he was struggling and questioned why she was now seeking greater involvement.

Cher’s attorneys went further, alleging that King-Allman saw a potential opportunity to gain control over Elijah’s income and suggested that money or fame may be motivating her actions.

Those assertions are allegations made by Cher’s side in the court dispute and have not been established as fact by a judge.

King-Allman has rejected that portrayal.

King-Allman Says She Wants Her Husband to Receive Long-Term Treatment

King-Allman, who married Elijah in 2013, said she loves her husband and wants him to receive a comprehensive treatment plan that gives him the best chance of recovery.

She has also argued that Elijah has been estranged from Cher for years and expressed concern that allowing his mother to influence the appointment of a conservator could undermine his autonomy and recovery.

In her own filing, King-Allman argued that placing someone selected by Cher in control could further strain Elijah emotionally.

Her position directly challenges Cher’s claim that she would not be an appropriate person to serve in a court-appointed role.

Elijah Blue Allman Remains in a New Hampshire Psychiatric Hospital

The dispute comes while Elijah remains in custody at a psychiatric hospital in New Hampshire and faces criminal charges stemming from two separate cases.

According to the court documents reported by PEOPLE, New Hampshire State Hospital initiated a guardianship proceeding on July 7.

Cher has supported the possible appointment of Elijah’s half-brothers, Chaz Bono and Devon Allman, rather than King-Allman.

The family dispute therefore is not simply about whether Elijah needs court supervision. A major question is who, if anyone, should be given authority to act on his behalf.

The September Hearing Did Not Resolve the Dispute

A hearing had been scheduled for September 1 to address whether King-Allman could or should serve in the court-appointed role.

However, Elijah did not appear at the hearing, and the matter was postponed.

The next hearing is currently scheduled for December 1, 2026, meaning no final decision has yet been made regarding King-Allman’s appointment.

Until a judge rules, the competing claims from Cher and King-Allman remain arguments made by opposing sides in an ongoing legal proceeding.

Cher Has Tried to Establish a Conservatorship Before

The latest dispute is part of a legal battle that dates back several years.

Cher first petitioned for a temporary conservatorship over Elijah’s estate in December 2023, arguing that he was unable to manage his financial resources because of alleged substance abuse and mental health problems.

That effort faced resistance from Elijah, who opposed having his mother control his finances.

Cher eventually voluntarily dismissed the proceeding in September 2024, after the parties pursued mediation and said they wanted to focus on rebuilding their family relationship.

But the dispute resurfaced in 2026.

Cher has previously argued in court that her son was unable to responsibly manage his finances and that court supervision was necessary to protect his assets.
